The fifteen-stone dry garden, which is small and gets shoulder-to-shoulder crowded within thirty minutes of opening. Be at the gate for the 08:00 opening and shoot from the left end of the veranda where the wall line stays clean.

Japan's tallest wooden pagoda at 55 m, with a pond on the south side that gives a full reflection when the air is still. Spring and autumn night illuminations extend hours and are the only time you get the pagoda lit against a dark sky.

A 120 m hall containing 1,001 gilded Kannon statues; photography is strictly banned inside, and staff enforce it. Shoot the exterior veranda and the long roofline instead, best from the south-west corner of the walled compound.

UNESCO Zen temple whose Sogenchi pond garden borrows the Arashiyama hills as backdrop; garden and buildings are separately ticketed. Buy the combined ticket and exit by the north gate, which drops you straight into the top of the bamboo path.

Twenty-minute uphill hike to a summit plateau with about 120 free-roaming Japanese macaques and the best open view over Kyoto. Never make eye contact or use flash with the monkeys, and feed only from inside the caged hut.
