- Maid of the MistLandmarks
Boards at the base of the Prospect Point Observation Tower on the US side, elevator included in the ticket. Everything gets soaked — use a rain sleeve or sealed body, keep a microfibre in a zipped pocket, and take your frames on the approach before the boat enters the Horseshoe spray.
- Journey Behind the FallsWaterfalls
Canadian side at Table Rock: elevators drop you into tunnels behind the Horseshoe curtain, ending at two portals and a lower deck. The portals are near-black against a blown-out sheet of water — expose for the water and let the rock go to silhouette rather than trying to hold both.
- Skylon TowerViewpoints
The 236 m Canadian-side deck is the only vantage that puts both the American and Horseshoe falls in one frame from above. Glass is thick and angled, so go right up with a rubber hood and time it for the moment the falls illumination fires during blue hour.
- Whirlpool Aero CarTransit
A 1916 Spanish-designed cable car strung across the whirlpool 4 km downriver on the Canadian side. It is open-sided, so you can shoot straight down at the green vortex with no glass — it runs seasonally, so confirm operation before driving out.
- Niagara Parks Butterfly ConservatoryZoos & aquariums
A humid glasshouse with roughly 2,000 free-flying butterflies about 9 km north of the falls. Your lens will fog solid on entry — stand inside the doors for ten minutes to let the glass equalise, then work the feeding stations where the butterflies actually sit still.
- Aquarium of NiagaraZoos & aquariums
Small, but the obvious fallback when the gorge is fogged in or frozen over. The outdoor sea lion and Humboldt penguin habitats give far better light than the indoor tanks — sit at the sea lion pool a few minutes before a scheduled feed.
- Niagara SkyWheelViewpoints
Enclosed 53 m wheel on Clifton Hill; gondola glass is scratched, so pick the cleanest pane and hold the lens flush against it. Honestly the better picture is of the wheel itself, shot from the bottom of Clifton Hill once the street neon is on.
- Old Fort NiagaraHistoric
Twenty minutes north where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario — the 1726 French Castle on the bluff with open water behind it is the shot. It faces an unobstructed western horizon, which gives you a real sunset the falls themselves never do.
- Niagara Falls Amtrak StationTransit
Amtrak stop NFL — platform, trains and station architecture; historic depots often photograph best from the track side at golden hour.
